Explore natural beauty in the midst of downtown at this 160-acre park. You’ll find activities here to satisfy the whole family, like the Barbara Fish Daniel Nature Play Area, one of the park’s most popular destinations. The unusual activities include a boulder rock scramble, a rolling lawn, a stream and waterfall, climbing logs and stones, and a 33-foot slide — and a tri-level tree house with a climbing net.
Tour Houston’s history through a series of fun, family-friendly exhibits at the Heritage Society. The tour is focused on restored buildings that reflect the real lives of Houston’s earliest residents, and it’s growth and development over the decades. Located at the center of Houston’s 30-acre art neighborhood, the Menil Collection features a permanent collection as well as rotating loan exhibitions and artists’ projects. With displays that allow the objects and works of art to speak for themselves, the Menil’s aims to create meaningful encounters with works of art for each guest.
The interior of this non-denominational chapel is also a major work of modern art, with 14 black but color-hued paintings by mid-century master Mark Rothko. The octagonal building design, with grey and rose stucco inside as well as a skylight, was also influenced by the artist. Take some time out of a busy tour of Houston to this sanctuary, located just two miles south of downtown.
It’s easy to spend all day sifting through music at this long-running, independently-owned record shop. You’ll find vintage and new vinyl with a selection that goes deep into a variety of genres, including blues, experimental jazz and traditional folk music from around the world. This is also the place to pick up your replacement record needles, turntable preamp, amp, or speakers.
