The Proper Way to Jump Start a Car

If you’re jump-starting your car in Pearland, you’ll need someone else’s car along with a pair of jumper cables. There’s also the option of calling a jump start car service such as AAA. Once you’re all set, follow these steps on how to properly jump start your car:

  1. Have the car with the good battery park facing the other vehicle, then ensure you’ve got the vehicle turned off. Engage both the parking brakes too.
  2. Open both hoods and find the batteries. Sometimes, you’ll have to remove a plastic hood to get the battery terminals out.
  3. Identify the positive and negative terminals. Ensure they’re clean and free of corrosion.
  4. Put the red clamp on the positive post on the dead battery.
  5. Uncoil the battery cable then attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery that has the charge.
  6. Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the good battery.
  7. The last clamp needs to go on an unpainted metal surface on your car’s frame.
  8. Once you’ve got a secure grip on everything, start the engine of the vehicle that has the good battery first, then start up the one with the dead battery.
  9. After you’ve jump started the dead vehicle, remove the jumper cables with caution. Go in the reverse order of how you attached them.
  10. Keep the engine running on the restarted vehicle for at least 10 minutes to make sure that the weak battery doesn’t die right away. Consult your owner’s manual for more info on the recommended time to do this.

What happens if your car won’t jump start? If you’re trying to jump-start your car and hear a clicking sound, or the electrical systems power on but the engine won’t turn over, these could be indicators of issues with the starter, ignition switch, battery, or fuse.
